A jeweler by trade, Charles Christofle founded the House of Christofle in 1830. Since its founding the French silverware manufacturer has cultivated its unique know-how. The exceptional pieces are made in its fine silver workshop in Yainville, Normandy. For fine silver, Christofle relies on manufacturing that is entirely done by hand according to traditional techniques.
Christofle was founded in 1830, when the jeweller Charles Christofle overtook his wife's jewellery workshop. He started his career at the age of fifteen, working at his brother in-law’s jewellery shop. By 1939, Charles became one of the largest French jewellers, employing over fifty people. Over time, Christofle has revolutionised methods, styles and techniques for the production of silver plates.
Their products are manufactured in France and Brazil and are sold worldwide in over 400 department stores as well as through 75 Pavillon retail stores. In 1845, Charles became one of the major silversmiths of 19th century France as well as the personal silversmith to Napoleon III. A private museum was opened exhibiting over 200 items of cutlery and silver plates, illustrating the company's history. Examples of Orientalism and Art Nouveau were incorporated in items which were produced for universal expositions as well as Art Deco.
In 1971, Christofle opened his first factory in Yainville, Normandy, where all productions are manufactured to this day. Amongst their product lines are fine silver flatware, porcelain dinnerware, silver jewellery and crystal vases. Antoine Perin, Man Ray and Jean Cocteau are amongst some of the renowned artists and designers whose creations have been produced by Christofle.
Christofle now offers jewellery in gold with diamonds and has added a new section that manufactures products for children such as silver tableware and baby cups.
Not only do their productions continue to decorate the tables of emperors, princes or maharajas, it still manages to leave an impression upon each customer. His exceptional expertise in goldsmith, guarantees products of highest quality. To this day, they still have its name bound a large amount of major creative trends.
